Documents to hand over with the car
- Registration certificate (RC), a copy. Keep the original (or the digital RC in DigiLocker or mParivahan) with you.
- Insurance policy, a copy, and it must be valid for the travel dates.
- Pollution under control (PUC) certificate, valid.
- Your ID and address proof, a copy, and the delivery address and contact.
- Authorisation letter if the car is in someone else's name (for example a parent or a company).
What the mover gives you
- A vehicle inspection report at pickup with existing scratches, dents and the odometer reading, signed by both sides, and photos.
- A consignment note (LR or bilty) with the car details and delivery address.
- The transit insurance details, if you take it.
Moving states for good: NOC and re-registration
If you are moving to another state and will keep the car there for more than 12 months, the law requires you to register it in the new state. That usually means:
- Getting a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the Delhi transport department using Form 28, available on the Parivahan portal.
- Paying road tax in the new state and applying for a new registration there.
- Asking the Delhi transport department about a refund of the unused road tax.
People who move states often because of their job may be eligible for a BH-series (Bharat) number, which avoids re-registration. Check eligibility on the Parivahan portal.
Before the car is handed over
- Fuel at a quarter tank or less.
- Remove valuables, loose items and any accessories you do not want to risk.
- Fold the mirrors and lower the antenna.
- Wash the car so scratches are easy to see during inspection.
- Keep the second key with you.
