Materials you need
- Strong double-wall cartons in small and medium sizes (heavy items go in small boxes).
- Bubble wrap, foam sheets and plain newsprint (printed newspaper can stain).
- Corrugated sheets and corner guards for mirrors, frames and glass tops.
- Good packing tape and a marker for labels.
Crockery and glassware
- Line the bottom of the carton with crumpled paper.
- Wrap each plate separately and stand plates on their edge, like files, never flat.
- Wrap glasses individually, stuff the inside with paper, and pack them upright near the top.
- Fill every gap so nothing moves when you shake the box gently.
- Mark the carton FRAGILE and THIS SIDE UP on all sides.
Mirrors, frames and glass tops
Put an X of masking tape across the glass, wrap in bubble wrap, add corner guards and sandwich between corrugated sheets. Large mirrors and glass dining tops travel best in a wooden crate and always stand upright in the truck.
TVs and electronics
Use the original box if you still have it. Otherwise wrap the screen in a soft cloth, then bubble wrap, and pack between foam or corrugated sheets. Remove stands and wall mounts and bag the screws. Photograph the cable connections before unplugging, so setting up again is easy.
Idols and pooja items
Wrap each idol in a soft cloth, then bubble wrap, and pack in a small box of its own with plenty of padding. Many families prefer to carry idols themselves on moving day.
